The damned S-400 had gotten missiles away before he could take it down, but his two LongShots were engaged with the Chinese fighters. He looked at the mission timers on this tac screen. His ALARM attack was still a half minute out.

His plan was going to hell. Iron bombs were hard for air defense to intercept, but a winged JDAM-ER dropping from 30,000 feet up and 50 kilometers out could both be seen and intercepted, if Port Aeon’s air defenses were still online.

“Pull Bird Two back and throw it at those fighters,” he ordered. “They don’t know it is weapons dry.” Their Outlaw had just hit 30,000 feet. “Nose up, Uncle,” he said into his throat mic. “Loadmaster, drop the ramp. Deploy Rapid Dragon pallet two.”

“Deploying pallet two,” the loadmaster replied from the rear of the aircraft, as Uncle put Outlaw into a nose-up attitude. In back, a crate holding 20,000 lbs. of high-explosive hell began sliding down Outlaw’s deck and off the ramp. As its drogue chutes deployed, the heavy bombs began dropping from their boxes, their wings snapped out, and they turned sharply, settling in for the glide toward their targets.

“Uncle, take us back down,” Rory said tightly.

“Missile warning!” his EW officer said. “Chinese destroyer has launched on us. I’m showing two radar signatures, bearing one ninety nine …”

“Uncle …” Rory called, pulling his harness tighter.

“I got the missiles on the scope,” the pilot replied with unnatural calm. Outlaw tipped onto one wing and steepened its dive, engines screaming. “Make peace with your demons, boys. This old girl is no ballerina.”
